Gas Fireplace Facts & Tips


  • Fireplace Vent Types
    • B-Vent Gas Fireplaces: Venting goes ONLY up the chase.
    • Direct Vent Gas Fireplaces: Venting goes up the chase or out through the side or back of a home.
    • Vent Free Gas Fireplaces: Windows must be open while the fireplace is operating. QFS is not able to certify these appliances as "safe," since most owners/renters keep their windows closed during operation (this can lead to health issues). CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFO
  • Signs You Fireplace Needs Service
    • If the pilot is not burning and goes out after a short burn.
    • When glass, mantle other areas around the fireplace are discolored.
    • Soot build-up anywhere, but especially if found around the outside of the firebox or on the termination vent cap.
  • Gas Fireplace Safety Tips
    • Never turn up gas pressure to get a better flame.
    • Never operate a sealed unit without the glass securely in place.
    • Never replace your gas fireplace logs without first calling the manufacturer.
    • If your pilot continually goes out, there is a reason! Get it serviced promptly.
    • After every servicing of a gas appliance, your technician must do a gas leak and CO test.
    • Always check the manufacturer's manual for specifics about log placement, secondary air, and venting.
    • Any discoloration of the glass or the surrounding walls and/or mantel of the unit is a sign of safety hazard.
    • If you smell gas, immediately shut off the gas valve leading to the fireplace and have your fireplace serviced by a certified technician.
    • If you don't know where the shut-off is or you don't have the key, contact your energy provider immediately and they'll send a technician to your home to shut the gas off.  They will also tag the location of the gas leak.
    • Never make alterations to the burner tube or pan without direct permission from the manufacturer. This also includes modifying the firebox.
